OBSERVE
I was pleasantly surprised in my students during phonics time. They are growing to become great readers and were able to identify and write all the slides I had chosen and then being able to add letters to create words. I was so proud of how hard my students worked this week in phonics.
REFLECT
This week I reflect on my lessons specifically something that I need to be more attentive to is my time. I have not balanced the planning and teaching timing to be exact. I know that this will come with time, but it is just something that I want to be more attentive to in the classroom.
FOCUS
This week I began teaching my edTPA segment and will finish next week. This was a short-term goal that helps complete my long-term goal of finishing this segment early so I can take the proper amount of time to work on polishing up my commentaries.
BE PRODUCTIVE
This week I could have spent more time working on lesson plans at the beginning of the week. I was starting to feel the pressure with finishing my edTPA planning commentary, writing the narrative of my plans for completing task 2 and 3 and this blog. This whole learning experience is a lot of time management practice.
HAVE COURAGE
During phonics this week I noticed that students were taking longer to sound out and write the slides I had chosen to eliminate a few of the last slides so we could just focus on a few. This seemed to work better and was more manageable for the students.
BEGIN ANEW
Next week I plan to work hard on Tuesday during our teacher workday and begin working on lessons for the following week, and leveled the book in our classroom for my teacher led center.
NCTCS
1b. Teachers demonstrate leadership in the school
This week I participated in some professional development. I tried to contribute to the conversations we had to help represent the kindergarten grade level.
2e. Teachers work collaboratively with the families and significant adults in the lives of their students.
This week we had some behavior issues that resulted in office referrals and a parent phone call which I got to partake in. These parents were flexible and willing to come up with a plan for this particular student for their future behavior which was encouraging.
3d. Teachers make instruction relevant to students.
This week in phonics, when we were coming up with sentences with the words that students would be able to relate to like: jet- the jet flies in the air.
4g. Teachers communicate effectively.
This week I tried to keep note of how I really explain my directions and instruction so that it would be simple and to the point. I have learned that the more I talk the more confused these 5-year-olds are.
5a. Teachers analyze student learning
This week I analyzed students work from literacy centers, phonics, and our inclusion time. I based the assignments for inclusion based upon student’s DIBELS and TRC data from this past week.
This week in regards to my portfolio I have solely been working on my edTPA commentary. As of right now I don’t need supports from my university supervisor.
Abby,
ReplyDeleteI am pleased that you have already determined the need to work on management of instructional time. With experience and learning more about your students, you will find it easier and easier to balance planning and implementing the plans. Keep up the good work!
Abby,
ReplyDeleteI have had a lot of trouble planning for the appropriate amount of time as well. This week I was not able to finish most of my lessons, which was frustrating. I am working this week on making sure my pacing is better so that my students can have the opportunity to participate in all the activities I have planned for them. You are doing a great job! I hope this week goes well for you!
Hey Abby! I applaud you for getting so far with your edTPA at this point in the semester! Your hard work will pay off soon!! I also need to work on my time management inside and outside the classroom. I need to find more time to work on my lessons at the beginning of the week. I also need to make sure I have all of my materials ready for the week at the beginning of the week so I do not have to do this each afternoon for the next day. I also plan to work hard this Tuesday during the teacher work day on lessons, gathering materials, edTPA, etc. I have struggled to find activities and lessons that hold the interest of all of my kindergarten students. I am working on creating more smart board activities for the students to take part in during lessons. I have found all of the students really enjoy these activities and stay engaged in the material. I wish you the best of luck this coming week!! I know you will do a great job!!
